Deciding to learn first aid is the easy part. Working out which course to book, what you will need and what happens on the day can feel less straightforward. This step-by-step guide takes you from first enquiry to certificate.
For an overview of training options, see our guide to first aid training in Mumbai.
Step 1: Decide why you need the training
Your reason shapes the course you need:
- Personal preparedness. You want to be able to help family, friends or strangers.
- A workplace role. You have been asked to become a first aider or join your site's emergency response team.
- Compliance. Your employer needs certified first-aiders to meet regulations. In Maharashtra, the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH) enforces workplace safety law in factories, including first aid requirements. That law is now the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, which replaced the Factories Act, 1948 in November 2025.
- A specialist industry. Healthcare, wind energy and other sectors may require particular certifications.
Step 2: Choose the certification
- DISH certified training is relevant for factory and industrial staff in Maharashtra.
- American Heart Association (AHA) courses are widely recognised for CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS), and suit healthcare professionals and many corporate employers.
- Global Wind Organisation (GWO) first aid is required in the wind energy and renewables sector.
If you are not sure, ask your employer, safety officer or client which certificate they expect. Our guide to the different types of first aid course compares the options.
Step 3: Pick a provider
Choose a provider that holds the approvals you need and can show you the details. Look for plenty of hands-on practice, experienced trainers and an assessment at the end. Our guide on how to check that a first aid training centre is certified lists the questions to ask.
Step 4: Get in touch and agree the format
When you contact the provider, ask about:
- dates and timings for individuals and small groups
- training at your workplace, if you want to train a whole team at once
- course length, which ranges from a single day for basic courses to several days for advanced certification
- the language of instruction
- fees, which vary with the course level and length
Step 5: Complete the paperwork
The provider will tell you what it needs from you. Usually this includes your full name as it should appear on the certificate, contact details and some form of photo identification. Check the spelling of your name carefully, because it will be printed on your certificate.
Step 6: Prepare for the day
- Wear comfortable clothes. You will kneel on the floor to practise CPR and move around during scenarios.
- Mention any health problems or injuries to the trainer beforehand, especially back or knee problems.
- Arrive on time, because the practical sessions build on the early explanations.
- Bring a notebook if you like to write things down.
What you will learn
A good course will cover:
- CPR and AED use, for adults and, on many courses, children and infants
- Injuries, including fractures, severe bleeding, burns and head injuries
- Medical emergencies, such as heart attack, stroke and allergic reactions
- Workplace hazards, such as chemical burns, electric shock and heat-related illness
Common questions
Do I need to be fit? You need to be able to kneel and press firmly on a manikin's chest. If you have a back, knee or wrist problem, tell the trainer, who can usually adapt the practice.
Can I attend if I am pregnant or recovering from an injury? Talk to the provider first. Most of the course is suitable, and trainers can adjust the practical parts.
Will my certificate be accepted everywhere? It depends on the certification and who is checking it. Confirm with your employer or client before you book.
Step 7: After the course
You will receive your certificate once you have completed the course and passed the assessment. Keep a copy safe, note the expiry date and plan refresher training before it runs out. Share what you have learned with your family, and find out where the first aid kit and the nearest AED are at work.
