DISH, BLS, GWO or AHA Guidelines: Which First Aid Course Do You Need?

From First Aid with CPR to DISH, BLS, ACLS, GWO and training based on AHA guidelines, the main types of first aid course compared: who each one is for, what it covers, and how to build your skills over time.

"First aid course" covers a lot of ground. A one-day course for office staff, a certified programme for a factory, a resuscitation course for hospital staff and specialist training for wind turbine technicians all fall under the same heading. Choosing the wrong one wastes time and money, and may leave you without the certificate you need.

This guide compares the main types of first aid course and who each is for. For an overview of training in the city, see our guide to first aid training in Mumbai.

Why the choice matters

From corporate offices in BKC to manufacturing plants and wind farms, different workplaces carry very different risks. The right course gives people skills that match those risks and a certificate that the people who check it will accept. That means:

  • compliance with the requirements that apply to your workplace
  • faster, better response, reducing the harm from injuries and illness
  • certificates that are recognised by regulators, employers and clients

The main types of course

First aid with CPR. A practical all-round course for workplace first aiders and anyone who wants to be ready for an emergency. It covers assessing a casualty, CPR, using an AED, bleeding, burns, fractures and medical emergencies.

Basic first aid certification. A foundation programme combining theory with practice, suitable for workplace teams, families, schools and community groups.

Advanced first aid certification. For responders who may face severe injuries and life-threatening situations, with more practical work, more equipment and realistic simulations.

DISH certified first aid. For factories and industrial workplaces in Maharashtra that need training meeting the requirements of the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health. Typical content includes emergency management and triage, burns, fractures and bleeding, and response to workplace hazards.

Training based on AHA guidelines. Courses that follow current American Heart Association guidelines for CPR and AED use. Only authorised AHA Training Sites issue AHA certificates.

Basic Life Support (BLS). Focused on cardiac arrest: recognition, chest compressions, ventilation and defibrillation, for people who may need to manage a cardiac arrest.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). For healthcare teams, building on BLS with heart rhythm recognition and coordinated team management of a cardiac emergency.

GWO first aid. For the wind industry. GWO Basic Safety Training includes a first aid module, and GWO Enhanced First Aid prepares technicians working in remote or elevated locations, where professional medical help may take time to arrive.

Which course do you need?

If you are… Consider
An office worker or volunteer first aider First Aid with CPR or Basic First Aid
A factory worker or safety officer in Maharashtra DISH Certified First Aid
A responder in a high-risk industrial setting Advanced First Aid
A healthcare professional BLS, then ACLS
You want first aid and CPR taught to current AHA guidelines First Aid and CPR Training to International Guidelines
A wind turbine technician GWO BST First Aid, then Enhanced First Aid

If you are unsure, ask your employer or client which certificate they expect before you book.

What every good course should have

Whatever the type, look for:

  • hands-on practice on CPR manikins and AED trainers
  • experienced trainers, with medical or safety backgrounds
  • realistic scenarios, adapted to your workplace where possible
  • a proper assessment before a certificate is issued
  • small enough groups that everyone gets plenty of time on the manikins
  • clear information on how long the certificate is valid and when to refresh it

Building skills over time

Many people start with a foundation course and add to it as their responsibilities grow. A workplace first aider may later take advanced first aid; a nurse may move from BLS to ACLS; a wind technician may add Enhanced First Aid to BST. Whatever the path, keep certificates current with refresher training.
