Occupational health assessment being carried out in a clinical setting

The OEUK Medical Examination — officially the Offshore Energies UK Medical Examination — is a standardised health examination used for personnel involved in the offshore oil, gas and energy industry.

Offshore work can involve demanding physical conditions, remote working environments where medical help is not immediately at hand, noise, restricted spaces, emergency-response duties and exposure to occupational hazards. The examination is the point at which a candidate's health is assessed against that working environment.

Medical fitness is determined by the examining physician on the basis of the assessment and the candidate's medical history. Eduforce arranges and supports the examination; it does not decide the outcome.

Key Areas Covered

What the service includes.

  • Review of medical history and current medication
  • Assessment against the demands of the candidate's offshore role
  • Further clinical assessment where the examining physician considers it necessary
  • Guidance for candidates before the appointment
  • Medical documentation provided by the examining physician
  • Confidential handling of medical information
What It Covers

What the examination covers.

Four assessments form the core of the examination. What each one involves is described below; the standards applied and the fitness decision rest with the examining physician.

01

Drug & Alcohol Test

A urine screen covering a panel of controlled substances, together with a breath or blood alcohol test. The panel applied is determined by the examining clinic. Offshore operations are safety-critical and carried out far from immediate assistance, which is why impairment is screened for before a candidate travels.

02

Audiometry / Hearing Test

Pure-tone audiometry carried out in a sound-attenuated environment using headphones, testing hearing sensitivity across the low and high frequencies used in the test. Offshore installations are noisy environments in which alarms, radio communication and verbal warnings have to be heard reliably.

03

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

Spirometry, in which the candidate breathes into a spirometer. The measurements recorded include forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), the FEV1/FVC ratio and peak expiratory flow. Respiratory capacity matters where escape, emergency response or respiratory protective equipment may be required.

04

Vision Testing

Visual acuity, colour vision assessment, visual field testing, and intraocular pressure where the examining physician considers it necessary. Vision is assessed with corrective lenses where the candidate normally wears them. Reading instrumentation, identifying colour-coded systems and recognising hazards all depend on it.

Additional health assessments

Depending on medical history and the examining physician's evaluation, further clinical assessments may form part of the examination. They are not applied to every candidate as a matter of course.

  • Heart and blood pressure assessment
  • BMI and musculoskeletal assessment
  • Review of current medication
  • Urinalysis, including glucose and protein testing
  • ECG, where indicated
  • Psychological and mental health assessment

Who is it for?

  • Drilling and production personnel
  • Offshore technicians and engineers
  • Personnel supporting offshore vessels
  • Divers and diving personnel
  • Offshore catering and hospitality personnel
  • HSE and safety personnel
  • Auditors, surveyors and inspectors
  • Logistics personnel requiring offshore access

Certificate and renewal

Where the examining physician issues medical documentation, its validity period and the point at which a further examination is required depend on the requirements in force and on the individual assessment. Validity and renewal requirements should be confirmed with the examining physician and applicable current OEUK requirements. Acceptance of any certificate is a matter for the operator or organisation requesting it.

    Medical assessment

Medical history, current medication and general clinical assessment.

  4. 04

    Required testing

Drug and alcohol screening, audiometry, pulmonary function testing and vision assessment.

  5. 05

    Physician review

The examining physician reviews the results and decides whether further assessment is needed.

  6. 06

    Medical documentation
