Training overview
Safe Solar Work brings together the core safety practices of solar construction and maintenance: fire awareness, manual handling, work at height, and housekeeping and hand tools. Each area is taught against the hazards specific to utility-scale PV rather than generic industrial examples.
This module forms part of GWO Solar Safety Training.
What this module covers
- Fire Awareness — legislation, combustion and fire spread, extinguishing methods and agent selection, prevention, and firefighting equipment
- Manual Handling — injury types and symptoms, warm-up protocols, TILE risk assessment, and handling principles
- Work at Height — fall prevention, body harness, lanyard and anchor points, equipment inspection, self-retracting lifelines and rescue procedures
- Housekeeping and hand tools — site organisation, debris management, tool safety and maintenance, and electrical hazard awareness
Practical training
- Scenario-based firefighting practice
- Warm-up activities and ergonomic lifting technique
- Selecting and inspecting fall arrest equipment
- Safe climbing and positioning on array structures
Competencies
- Assess load characteristics and environmental factors before lifting
- Apply ergonomic lifting technique and recognise repetitive strain risk
- Select appropriate fall arrest equipment and inspect it for integrity
- Demonstrate safe climbing and positioning technique
Safety and risk awareness
- Electrical fire risk from PV systems and propagation across large arrays
- Heavy panel and mounting equipment handling in elevated temperatures
- Roof work, array height variation and structural complexity
- Wind and precipitation increasing fall risk
Learning objectives
- Manage fire hazards and respond to fire emergencies
- Apply proper manual handling technique
- Work safely at height using appropriate equipment and systems
- Recognise housekeeping requirements and hand tool safety
Covered in this module
- Fire Awareness
- Manual Handling
- Work at Height
