GWO Service Lift Training

Safe use, inspection and repair of wind turbine service lifts.

The Training

Wind turbine technicians working at height on a turbine in fall-protection equipment

Training overview

Service Lift Training covers the lift that carries personnel and equipment up the tower — how it is operated correctly, the responsibilities of the user, and the inspection, maintenance and repair work that keeps it safe to run. Three modules match three different roles.

Service Lift User is the foundation and a prerequisite for the other two. It concentrates on safe operation, pre-use inspection, and the emergency actions that apply when travel is interrupted mid-tower — the situation users are least prepared for.

Inspection and Maintenance covers systematic inspection of every lift subsystem, from gates and fences through to the fall arrest device. Installation, Inspection and Repair adds installation, commissioning, repair and troubleshooting on top of that content.

Why this training matters

The service lift is the piece of equipment technicians use most and think about least. A fault that goes unnoticed, or an emergency descent nobody has practised, turns a routine ascent into a rescue.

What you will learn

  • Take responsibility for using a service lift correctly and safely, working independently
  • Perform the necessary pre-use inspections
  • Carry out emergency actions appropriately, including evacuation from the lift
  • Identify, control and mitigate the risks in inspection, maintenance and repair work
  • Seek guidance from the manuals when needed

Training pathways

Initial Training

Delivered as the user, inspection and maintenance, or installation, inspection and repair module, depending on the role.

Key knowledge

  • Lift functionalities and safe operating standards
  • National, local, brand and company-specific requirements
  • Danger zones, drop zones and travel range safety
  • Lift subsystems — suspension, drive, wire rope, fall arrest device, interlocks
  • Commissioning and troubleshooting principles

Practical skills

  • Pre-use inspection, internal and external
  • Operating gates and fences and working within the danger zone
  • Fault identification and response during travel
  • Emergency descent and evacuation from the lift
  • Hands-on inspection of lift components

Safety and risk awareness

  • Drop zones with risk of falling objects
  • Danger zones around the operating lift
  • Overload and power failure scenarios
  • Working at height and in restricted spaces during inspection
  • Electrical hazards and component failure risks

Competencies

  • Use a wind turbine lift correctly and safely, independently and on your own initiative
  • Identify risks and hazards during inspection and maintenance and control them
  • Perform installation, repair and commissioning work safely

Key learning outcomes

  • Safe service lift operation
  • Pre-use inspection
  • Emergency action during interrupted travel
  • Inspection, maintenance and repair

Practical training

Hands-on inspection and operation of real lift equipment, including emergency descent and evacuation procedures.

Important information

  • Maximum 8 hours contact time per day, within a 10-hour training day.
  • Theory is delivered at a 1:12 instructor ratio and practical work at 1:6.
  • Maintenance and subsequent inspection personnel choices must align with any need for independence in relevant local legislation.
